What is an AI Dialogue?
Unlike quiz mode, AI dialogue uses open-ended questions (rather than a closed set of multiple-choice questions). Students respond in open text and work their way through the task step by step. Brian's chatbot provides adaptive support throughout. Finally, their learning success is automatically evaluated.
What kind of tasks can I create as AI dialogues?
AI dialogue tasks are very flexible and are suitable for the following areas of application:
- Simulations of competence-based situations, e.g. sales conversations, conflict resolution, etc.
- Maths problems with solutions; programming tasks for computer science
- Argumentation, text interpretation, essays, analyses
- Dynamic language training; targeted grammar training
- Concept explanations; application of methodologies to case studies; evaluation of data sets
- Knowledge queries; simulation of exam situations
- And much more
How does an AI dialogue differ from AI Tutor and Brian’s chatbots?
The main difference is that an AI dialogue is an exercise with a conclusion, feedback, and detailed analytics, whereas AI Tutor and chatbots are open-ended chats. AI dialogs are best used when a specific skill needs to be practiced and assessed. Learners follow the structure provided by the teacher.
You can find more on this topic here.
Educational Recommendation:
AI dialogues work best when they:
- are kept relatively short so that learners can quickly reach the conclusion and receive feedback
- and offer plenty of variety, encouraging repetition. This can be achieved by giving the AI creative freedom in generating responses or by providing a list of variations from which the AI selects at random
If you want to simulate highly complex tasks such as exams, it is often best to represent them through a series of AI dialogues. This allows learners to practice the individual steps.
For math and grammar exercises, it is recommended to have the AI generate a list of tasks with solutions via a chatbot (see below) during creation. This helps avoid AI errors.
Creation
In the course overview, simply click “+ Add Exercise”, then select “AI Dialogue.”
There are several ways to create a new AI dialogue: via chatbot, via template, or manually.
Creating an AI Dialogue via Chatbot
The easiest way to create an AI dialogue is via chatbot.
Simply tell the chatbot what kind of exercise you want to create. It will ask you for specific instructions, then show you a sample interaction between a learner and the chatbot, and finally summarize the exercise for you.
If you have a document you’d like to use as the basis for the exercise, you can upload it to the system by clicking the “+” icon at the bottom.
Then click on the small arrow that appears next to the word “Upload”:
Examples of documents that can be uploaded here:
- Worksheets that already contain exercises intended to be mirrored on Brian or used as sample exercises
- Instructional texts intended to serve as background information for the exercise
- Literary or theoretical texts to be discussed in the exercise
After uploading, the bot will confirm the document’s contents and ask for an explanation of how it should be used.
Whether you’re working with documents or not, simply describe to the bot how you envision the exercise, or let its suggestions guide you.
Creation is complete as soon as the chatbot makes the following statement and shows you two academic hats:
The chatbot will then generate the task. Once it's done, it will offer to let you try the task yourself.
Tip: You can also provide the chatbot with a website to use as the basis for the AI dialogue exercise. Just enter the URL.
Creating an AI dialogue using a template:
Templates are subject-specific task types. All you have to do is fill in a few input fields, and then you can test the task by clicking “Preview.”
To create an AI dialogue using a template, after clicking “+ Add AI Dialogue,” select the “Configure” option instead of “Chatbot.”
The “Available Templates” dropdown menu offers subject-specific assignment types and provides brief descriptions of them.
How do I customize an AI dialogue that has already been created?
AI dialogues created via a chatbot or template can be further edited in Pro Mode.
If the dialogue was created via a chatbot, selecting “Configure” automatically takes you to Pro Mode. For templates, you must switch the toggle to Pro Mode.
In the input fields, you can add instructions for learners or the chatbot or edit existing instructions. The text editor also allows you to upload images or videos and embed links to make them available to learners while they are working on the assignment.
Can I create assignments directly in Pro Mode?
Yes. If you’re familiar with the system and prefer to enter prompts directly, you can simply switch to “Configure” and set the toggle to Pro Mode. You can then freely write the instructions for learners and the chatbot.
The course settings include “AI Model.” What does that mean in this context?
Brian uses different AI models depending on the type of task to optimize the result. Depending on the type of task, Brian automatically selects either the “universal model” or the “advanced thinking” model. This can be changed manually. The universal model is fast and highly intelligent and is suitable for most tasks. The “advanced thinking” model is best suited for complex tasks (math, computer science, grammar, etc.).
